NPY’s PotD*: Day Forty

< Next PotDPrevious PotD >

His:

Turkey Day #1 for NPY at a friend’s. He brought the dessert: pumpkin pie and whipped cream. Notice how he grabbed the drumstick and a nice amount of the rice side dish….!

Hers:

Look-ee… we made a turkey! For the past seven years I have spent three Thanksgivings at marathons (Victoria, Kelowna, and Portland) and most of the rest were at my Point Grey aunt’s house, fun family affairs that I’ve dragged NPY to on several occasions. I’ve kind of missed out on the student/transplant “Orphan Thanksgiving” which is kind of what Lil Sis and I did this year. We bought the turkey from Loblaw a week ago and since then, I saw a turducken breast at Longo’s that made my interest in cooking a whole 10-pound turkey wane somewhat. Next Thanksgiving (i.e., the American one)??

It was a lot of work. Lil Sis handled the bird while I gave advice after conferring with the Internet and I chopped things. Our sides included steamed greens (green cauliflower and zucchini), yam frites (the weakest link), creamy garlic mashed potatoes, and the most delicious wine-broth-butter braised carrots. We prepared (Swiss) Chalet sauce from a package and washed it all down with Inniskillin East West series Riesling-Gewurztraminer. Turkey was perfectly cooked and I had the honour (head of the household?) of carving which was a cathartic experience.
